Salary Calculator Guide: How to Use CTC, PF, HRA and Tax Inputs

Learn how to use SmartFintool’s salary calculator correctly, what each CTC input means, and how PF, HRA, professional tax and income tax affect in-hand salary.

Direct answer

Use the salary calculator by entering CTC, basic salary percentage, HRA, rent paid, professional tax and tax regime. It estimates in-hand salary after employee PF, tax and other deductions, but no calculator can replace your actual payslip because employer structures differ.

Inputs you need

InputWhat it meansWhere to find it
Annual CTCTotal annual employer costOffer letter or CTC breakup
Basic salaryBase used for HRA and PFPayslip or salary structure
HRA receivedHouse rent allowance componentPayslip
Rent paidActual annual rent paidRent receipts or rental agreement
Professional taxState-specific payroll deductionPayslip
Tax regimeNew or old income tax regimeYour declaration or tax estimate

How the estimate is calculated

  1. Start with CTC and remove employer-side components such as employer PF and gratuity accrual.
  2. Arrive at annual gross salary.
  3. Subtract employee PF, professional tax, other deductions and estimated income tax.
  4. Divide the remaining annual amount by 12 for monthly in-hand salary.

Example

For ₹12 lakh CTC with 40% basic and default settings, the calculator shows an illustrative monthly in-hand figure. If you pay rent and choose the old regime, HRA exemption can reduce taxable income. If you choose the new regime, HRA exemption is generally not available for most salaried taxpayers.

Common mistakes

  • Treating CTC as take-home salary.
  • Forgetting employer PF and gratuity in CTC.
  • Using HRA exemption without paying actual rent.
  • Using the same professional tax for every state.
  • Comparing new and old regime without entering actual deductions.

Article FAQ

What is a good basic salary percentage?

Basic salary is often 30–50% of CTC, but there is no universal rule. Use your offer letter or payslip.

Does the salary calculator include TDS exactly?

It estimates income tax using the centralized tax engine, but actual TDS depends on declarations, employer policy and deductions.

Can I use this for offer comparison?

Yes, but compare all benefits, PF, gratuity, variable pay, leave policy and reimbursements—not only in-hand salary.
