EPF Calculator Guide: Employee PF, Employer PF, EPS and Interest

Learn how EPF is calculated, how employee and employer contributions are split into EPF and EPS, and what assumptions to verify before planning retirement.

Direct answer

EPF is a retirement savings scheme for salaried employees. In a common model, the employee contributes 12% of PF wage, while the employer contributes 12% that is split between EPS/pension and EPF. The EPF interest rate is notified periodically and must be verified before making decisions.

How EPF works

EPF combines employee savings, employer contribution and declared interest. It is useful for forced retirement saving, but actual applicability depends on your salary structure, establishment rules and EPFO notifications.

Contribution split

PartCommon modelWhere it goes
Employee12% of PF wageEPF
Employer EPS8.33%, subject to pensionable wage capEPS/pension
Employer EPFRemaining part of employer 12%EPF

Example

If monthly PF wage is ₹50,000 and the EPS monthly cap in the model is ₹1,250, then employee EPF is ₹6,000 per month and employer EPF is ₹4,750 per month. Total EPF contribution is ₹10,750 per month. At the selected interest rate, the calculator compounds these contributions monthly to estimate a corpus.

What to verify

  • Whether your basic or basic + DA is treated as PF wage.
  • The current EPF interest rate from EPFO.
  • Applicability of higher pension or special establishment rules.
  • Tax rules on EPF interest, contribution and withdrawal.
  • Your current EPF balance from the EPFO passbook.

EPF in retirement planning

EPF can be one part of a retirement plan, not the only plan. Add the projected EPF corpus to the optional retirement benefits section in the retirement calculator, then compare it with NPS, PPF, SIP and SWP plans.

Article FAQ

Is EPF interest fixed?

No. EPF interest is notified periodically and can change. Use the latest EPFO rate for current decisions.

Can I rely only on EPF for retirement?

EPF is useful, but retirement planning should also consider inflation, lifestyle goals, medical costs and other investments such as SIP, NPS or PPF.

Does employer 12% go fully to EPF?

In the common model, part goes to EPS/pension and the remainder to EPF. The calculator separates EPS and EPF amounts.
