Retirement Planning Guide 2026: Calculate Your Exact Retirement Corpus

Complete step-by-step guide to plan your retirement in India. Learn SWP strategy, inflation adjustment, corpus calculation, and how to create monthly income after retirement.

Direct answer

Retirement planning means estimating inflated future expenses, calculating the corpus that can fund those expenses, and then building that corpus through SIP, step-up SIP, EPF, NPS, PPF, gratuity and other savings. Use assumptions conservatively and review the plan every year.

1. Estimate future monthly expenses

Start with today’s essential monthly expenses. The calculator inflates this amount until retirement. If you spend ₹50,000 today and inflation is 6%, the same lifestyle costs much more after 25–30 years.

2. Calculate required corpus

The corpus is estimated using inflated monthly expenses, the number of retirement years, post-retirement return and inflation. The calculator uses a real-return annuity formula rather than a generic motivational multiple, because corpus needs depend on your own expenses and assumptions.

SMARTFINTOOL METHOD

Inflate expenses → calculate present value of withdrawals → compare with projected corpus

3. Add existing retirement benefits

  • Existing investments and savings.
  • Current monthly SIP or step-up SIP.
  • Expected EPF corpus.
  • Expected NPS corpus after considering annuity rules.
  • Expected gratuity.

The retirement calculator has optional fields for EPF, NPS and gratuity so they reduce the required additional investment instead of being ignored.

4. Close the gap

If projected corpus is lower than required corpus, increase monthly investment, start a step-up SIP, delay retirement, reduce optional retirement expenses, or choose suitable investments according to your risk profile.

5. After retirement

SWP can generate regular income from mutual fund investments, NPS annuity provides another income stream, and EPF/PPF can add liquidity. Keep a separate medical and emergency buffer.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Returns and inflation are assumptions, not guarantees.
  • NPS annuity and withdrawal rules must be verified from current PFRDA provisions.
  • EPF interest rate is notified periodically and should be verified.
  • Taxes, medical emergencies and estate goals are not fully modeled.

Article FAQ

How much retirement corpus do I need?

It depends on inflated monthly expenses, retirement duration and post-retirement returns. The retirement calculator estimates this instead of using only a generic multiple.

Why does inflation matter?

Inflation reduces purchasing power. ₹50,000 per month today may require several lakhs per month after 25–30 years.

Can EPF and NPS be included?

Yes. Enter expected EPF, NPS and gratuity amounts in the optional retirement benefits section.
